United Voices of Praise, other wise known as UVOP, is a student formed gospel choir on campus. Their meetings have a praise dance and poetry section where members can sing, dance, and praise the Lord. This year an additional section has been added; the step team. As Eastern is a liberal university with no religious affiliation, most clubs and organizations do not revolved around the different religious identities students might form part of. United Voices of Praise definitely stands out and deserves credit for their mission. They provide a safe place for everyone to go to, to continue practicing their faith, and meet people with similar beliefs.
“My favorite thing about UVOP is being around so many great singers; so much potential in one room,” said Ahyiana Morris, the president of UVOP. They are open to everyone and new faces are always welcomed!
With 18 wonderful members, UVOP has gone from being a small circle to a full on, real choir almost expanding their members twice as much as last year. “This is our third year as an official club and I can not wait to see what this year has in store for us,” says Danielle Civil, a section leader of UVOP.
United Voices of Praise is a club “committed to making God famous at Eastern Connecticut State University.” Their mission statement is to “Minister and serve a higher being, Jesus Christ. Our mission to reach the students of ECSU, and to allow them to grow not only mentally at this University, but to enrich their spiritual being. Our goal is to be completely inclusive through the art of song, poetry, instruments, and dance” (United Voices of Praise Constitution).
The club had their first opening event on Oct. 4, 2018, at the Fine Arts Amphitheater Circle from 5 to 7p.m. at the University. There were free snacks and refreshments provided in addition to a raffle. If you are interested in joining the club or hearing great voices on a Wednesday night, visit UVOP in the Fine Arts Building, room 305, at 7p.m. For more information, checkout and follow their Instagram page @uvop_eastern.
